A Little Box of Advent Calendar
It’s that time of year, the season of Advent. I have made a homemade Advent calendar every year so far. For the past few years, our favorite classic idea has been to fill small bags with toys and candy and hang them on the wall. This time of year, my daughter is excited to imagine what’s inside, wakes up earlier than usual in the morning, and her eyes sparkle with little gifts every day.
Well, it was at the end of September that I started thinking about what to do with this year’s Advent calendar. To approach it differently, I decided to bring to fruition an idea that had been warming in my heart for a long time.
My almost 8 years old daughter is exclusively interested in “dress up.” I like the idea of the contents not being purchased, but instead simple, handmade items. And I made 24 pieces of her favorite accessories, hair clips, etc. I placed them in a small Tinker Tray divided into 24 compartments. Then I put a paper lid over them. This idea is that each morning the child would tear open the paper and take out the contents.
A special Advent calendar with small handmade gifts arranged in small divided boxes. These 24 separated boxes are recyclable and will surely become our staple for years to come. At this time of the year, I wish I was a kid again!
Materials
– 24 Compartments tray *More about trays at the end
– 24 Small gifts
– Paper *to be used as a lid
– Double-sided tape or glue
Instructions for making
Step 1. Prepare 24 Gifts
Prepare 24 small gifts, such as something the child likes or is currently interested in. They don’t have to be special. The experience of putting them in the box and taking them out each morning is already special.
But you may still have trouble deciding what to put inside. Some gift ideas are noted at the end of the article.
Step 2. Place Gifts in 24 Compartments
Place the gift in the box. It is fun to spend time worrying and thinking about what to put in the box on which day.
Step 3. Cover with Paper and Write Numbers
Apply glue to every corner of the tray edge with a brush. Place the paper on top of it and stick it on. Once dry, cut off the excess paper. If you want to make it easy, you can use double-sided tape. Then write the numbers as a final touch. Now all you have to do is wait for the day of Advent.
Production Note
About 24 Compartments Tray
I know that finding a “just right” tray with 24 compartments is not easy.
If you are good at woodworking, you can make them any size and shape you like.
In this case, I used a GRAPAT Tinker Tray. It actually has 20 compartments, but I added dividers to make it 24.
You can find several others online as well; MrCraftsmanHK’s Display Tray is affordable and good quality for compact items (except for shipping costs!). Or try searching for “24 Compartment tray” or “Sorting tray” or “Tinker tray”. For example, you might use two trays with 12 compartments, or a combination of four trays with 6 compartments. Hopefully you find a tray that works for you.
Ideas for Box Contents
The box does not have to be entirely handmade, but you can include toys or candy. If you put together a message card from parents besides the gift, it could make it even more special. This is one of idea that I would like to try someday.

This is last year’s advent calendar. The idea of putting gifts in small bags and hanging them on the wall is a very quick and easy to do. I also really like the fact that the cotton bags are recyclable. I will share more details sometime.

今年もアドべントの楽しい季節がやってきました。私はこれまでに毎年手作りのアドべントカレンダーを作ってきました。ここ数年は、小さな袋におもちゃやお菓子を入れて壁に吊るすのが私たちの好きな定番のアイデアでした。この時期の娘は、中身を想像して胸を躍らせ、朝はいつになく早起きで、毎日小さなギフトに目を輝かせています。
さて、今年のアドべントカレンダーをどうしようと考え始めたのは9月の終わりのことでした。そしていつもと違う方法で、ずっと胸の中に温めていたアイデアを実現させることにしました。
もうすぐ8歳になる娘の興味はもっぱら”おしゃれ”。中身は買ったものではなく、簡素でもなるべく手作りのもので……と考えて、彼女好みのアクセサリーや、ヘアクリップなどを24個作りました。そしてそれらを24に区切られたティンカートレイの小部屋に入れました。その上から紙で蓋をするのです。子どもは毎朝その紙を破って中身を取り出す、というアイデアです。
小さく分けられた箱に、小さな手作りギフトを並べた特別なアドべントカレンダー。この24に区切られた箱はリサイクル可能で、きっとこれから先の数年間は私たちの定番になることでしょう。

用意するもの

つくりかた
Step 1. 24個のギフトを用意する
子どもの好きなもの、いま興味のあるものなど小さなギフトを24個用意します。特別なものでなくていいのです。箱の中に入れて、毎朝取り出す体験がもう特別なことですから。
それでも中身を何にしようか悩みますよね。記事の最後にギフトのアイデアをいくつか記しました。
Step 2. 24の区画にギフトを入れる
箱にギフトを入れます。どの日に何を入れるか、悩みながら考える時間も楽しいものです。
Step 3. 紙で蓋をして数字を書く
トレイのエッジに刷毛で隅々まで水糊を塗ります。その上から紙を乗せて貼り付けます。乾燥したら余分な紙をカットします。簡単に済ませたい場合は、両面テープを使ってもいいでしょう。そして最後の仕上げに数字を書きます。あとはアドベントの日を待つだけです。

私は24に区切られた”ちょうどよい”トレイを見つけることが簡単ではないことを知っています。
木工が得意ならば、好きな大きさ、形に作るのがいいですね。

箱の中身のアイデア
箱の中身は、全て手作りではなくても、おもちゃやキャンディーを入れてもいいですね。ギフト以外にもママやパパからの一言メッセージカードを一緒に入れたら、それはさらに特別なものになるかもしれません。私もいつかやってみたいアイデアの一つです。
