December has arrived, bringing a season when the cold feels even more. During such times, why not focus on a handwork indoors in the warmth? Needle and thread, and the fabric I usually use… no, will use paper in this time. Embroider along holes pre-punched in the paper. Simply thread the needle through the holes of the pattern, and you can easily enjoy creating small, simple embroidered accents.
I have embroidered the covers of handmade photo albums, such as the Accordion Pocket Photo Album and the Photo Advent Calendar. It’s a magical way to transform into something special with just a little bit of handwork.
My daughter has enjoyed embroidery since she was little, and she once enjoyed embroidering on leaves too (see Stitched on Fallen Leaves). The method is the same for both paper and leaves: pre-punched holes serve as guides, and you embroider along them. I think it’s also an ideal way for little ones to get started with embroidery.
I’m excited to change patterns with the seasons, embroider on notebooks and small boxes, and explore other ideas that come to mind. Along with original embroidery patterns available for free download, I’ll share a collection of embroidery ideas on paper that I’ve enjoyed so far.

About the Design Templates

You can download and use original embroidery patterns featuring nature motifs. The pattern I’ve prepared can be transformed into various designs by changing thread colors and placement. The embroidery techniques used are Running stitch and French knot stitch.

Instructions for making

Here is a brief explanation of basic embroidery techniques. For detailed instructions, please also refer to our past post Hand Stitched Holiday Card.
1. Secure the pattern to the item you wish to embroider using tape or similar.
2. Use an awl or needle to pierce holes along the dots of the pattern.
3. Remove the pattern and sew with embroidery thread, using the holes you made as a guide.

Idea 1. For Cover of the Photo Album

Idea 2. For Greeting Card

This is the holiday card I made with my daughter. For details on the creation process, please see the past posts for the Hand Stitched Holiday Card. Centered around Christmas motifs like fir trees and snowflakes, we packed it full of holiday cheer using red and green embroidery thread.

Idea 3. For Gift Box

I embroidered a small craft box. Use it to store small items or as a gift box for presents.

Idea 4. For cover of the notebook

This is embroidery on the cover of an affordable ring notebook. I made it as a birthday gift for my daughter, who loves drawing and carries her notebook everywhere. I removed the simple craft cover from the rings, re-covered it with Japanese paper in her favorite color, and then embroidered on top of that.
