Flower Crown for Celebration
Flower crowns celebrate the arrival of a new season from spring to early summer. The summer solstice – when the daylight hours are the longest of the year, is just around the corner. In Europe, where daylight hours are scarce, the summer solstice is one of the most important days of the year. People celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice by making flower crowns and praying for good health and success in love throughout the year. Let’s celebrate the new season with flower crowns at this time of the year when flowers are in full bloom and plants are budding.
All you need are flowers and raffia. It is made by inserting your favorite flowers into the braided raffia as you weave. My favorite flowers and greens are starch, eucalyptus, and sea lavender etc… If you use flowers that easily dry, you can enjoy their beauty for a long time after they are made. There are no specific rules, so please use your favorite flowers available at that time and place.
The way to arrange the flowers is also up to you. Some people use only white and green flowers, while others put a point on one side of the crown to give it more volume. Let’s create your own unique flower crown.
Surrounded by flowers and moving your hands around, you will naturally feel a sense of excitement. This is a great activity for children and adults alike during this season of the year.
Materials

– Raffia *About 40 inches long / 10 pieces
– Scissors
– Ribbon *Optional decoration
Instructions for making
Step 1. Braiding Raffia
Bundle about 10 strands of raffia and braid them together. Braid a ribbon together at this time for a more glamorous accent. I used a sheer organza ribbon.
Step 2. Tie to Head Size
Tie the braided raffia to the size of your head to make the base of the flower crown.
Step 3. Cut Flowers
Cut the flowers to about 3-4inch lengths. Remove excess leaves, etc.
Step 4. Insert the Flowers
Insert the flowers into the raffia. It is smoother to insert the stems after unraveling the braid. After inserting the stem, insert the stem again from another part. Secure the stems to the raffia as if you were sewing a dolphin stitch using the stems as needles. Cut the excess stems with scissors.
From the back, you can see the stems are woven into the raffia.
Step 5. Celebrate Spring
Any balance you like and your flower crown is complete. Put it on your head and celebrate spring!
After making it...
The dried flowers have not faded over time and are still decorating the room. I hope you will be able to enjoy them for a long time.

Flower Crown for Celebration
春から初夏にかけて新しい季節の訪れを祝うフラワークラウン。これから一年で一番昼間が長くなる夏至が訪れます。日照時間の少ないヨーロッパでは夏至は一年の中でもとても大切な日。人々はフラワークラウンを作って夏至の訪れを祝い、一年の健康や恋の成就を祈ります。花が咲き誇り草木が芽吹くこの時期に、フラワークラウンと共に新しい季節を祝いましょう。
必要な材料は花とラフィア。三つ編みにしたラフィアに好きな花を編むように挿し込んで作ります。私の好きな花は、スターチス、ユーカリ、シーラベンダーなどの花やグリーン。このようなドライになりやすい花を使えば、つくったあとも長く美しく楽しむことができます。特に決まりはありませんので、その時に、その場所で手に入る好きな花をご用意ください。
花の挿し方も人ぞれぞれです。白い花だけを使ったフラワークラウンや、片方にポイントを置いてボリュームを持たせたもの。それぞれの個性溢れるフラワークラウンをつくりましょう。
花に囲まれて手を動かすと自然と気持ちが高まります。小さなお子さんから大人まで楽しめる、この時期にとっておきのアクティビティです。
用意するもの
– 花 *花の種類は一番最後に記しています
– ラフィア *1mほどの長さ／10本
– ハサミ
– リボン *オプションの装飾です
つくりかた
Step 1. ラフィアを編む
ラフィアを10本ほど束ねて三つ編みにします。この時にリボンを一緒に編むとより華やかなアクセントになります。私は薄手のオーガンジーリボンを使いました。
Step 2. 頭のサイズに結ぶ
編んだラフィアを頭のサイズに合わせて結び、ベースとなるフラワークラウンの土台をつくります。
Step 3. 花をカットする
花を8~10cmほどの長さにカットします。余分な葉っぱなどは落とします。
Step 4. 花を挿す
ラフィアに花を挿していきます。三つ編みをほぐすように広げてから茎を挿すとスムーズです。茎を挿し入れたら、別の箇所から茎を挿し出します。茎を針に見立ててドルフィンスティッチを縫うように、茎をラフィアに固定していきます。余分な茎はハサミで切ってください。
裏から見ると、茎がラフィアに編み込まれているのがわかります。
Step 5. 春をお祝いしましょう
あなたの好きなバランスで花を挿したら、フラワークラウンの完成です。頭に乗せて春をお祝いしましょう!
