Fireworks Card
To welcome the arrival of summer aka the summer solstice, the card was made to look like firework bursts.
This fun play utilizes the principles of paper chromatography. Fold the card, color it with a marker, and dip it in water. In no time at all, you have a card with beautiful gradations that look like firework bursts. You can read more about paper chromatography and the results of the experiment here.
Materials
– Circular filter paper* φ75 mm / I used this
– Water-based pen
– Cups
– Water
*Coffee filters or half sheets of paper can be cut into rounds and used instead.
Instructions for making
Step 1. Fold the Paper
Fold the circular filter paper three times. Once folded, open the original circle and fold along the crease in alternating folds. If using a half sheet of paper or a coffee filter, you can cut a 75 mm circle as a substitute.
Step 2. Mark a Dot
Open the paper again and draw a dot along the top of the fold about 1 cm from the center. Feel free to place any color you like. If you prefer a simple, targeted pattern. I recommend alternating colors, as shown in the photo. Experiment with different patterns to find the one you like. When you are done drawing, place the folds back.
Step 3. Soak in the Water
Fill the cup with 5~10mm of water and gently dip the pointed tip of the paper in Step 2 into the water. At this time, be careful not to let the ink touch the water directly.
Step 4. Observe
Observe how the paper absorbs water. You will see how it quickly soaks up the water and carries it to the edge of the paper with the ink on it.
Step 5. Dry the Paper
Once the ink has run to the edges, pull the paper up from the cup and allow it to dry. When it is completely dry, it is finished.
For More Beautiful Finish
Ironing will elongate the folds for a more beautiful finish. When ironing, please use a low temperature and be careful not to burn yourself.

We used this card to write a message. It is up to you how you use it. If I come up with a more fun way to use them, I will share with you again.
Fireworks Card
夏の訪れを迎えるように、花火のようなカードが出来上がりました。これは、ペーパークロマトグラフィーの原理を生かした楽しい遊びです。折って、ペンで色付けして、水に浸す。するとあっという間に花火のような美しいグラデーションのカードができあがりました。ペーパークロマトグラフィーについての詳しい解説と実験の結果はこちらにあります。
つくりかた
Step 1. 紙を折る
ろ紙を３回折ります。折り目を付けたら元の円形に開き、折り目に沿って、交互にひだのように折ります。半紙やコーヒーフィルターを使う場合は75mmの円形に切って代用することができます。
Step 2. 点を描く
再び紙を開いて、中心から1cmくらいの場所に折り目の上に沿って点を描きます。自由に好きな色を乗せてください。シンプルに対象的なパターンを好む場合は、写真のように交互に違う色を置くことをおすすめします。いろいろ実験をしてみて好きなパターンを見つけてください。書き終わったら、折り目を戻してください。
Step 3. 水につける
カップに5mm~1cmほどの少量の水を入れて、Step 2の紙の先端をそっと水に浸してください。この時に、インクが直接水に触れないように注意してください。
Step 4. 観察する
紙が水を吸う様子を観察します。あっという間に水を吸い上げ、インクを乗せて紙の端まで運んでいく様子を見ることができます。
Step 5. 乾燥させる
端までインクが流れたら、紙をカップから引き上げて乾燥させます。完全に乾燥したら完成です。
より美しく仕上げるために
アイロンをかけると折り目が伸びてより美しい仕上がりになります。アイロンを使う際は低音で、火傷に注意してください。
