Pencil Shaving Carnations
Carnations, the symbol of Mother’s Day, carry messages of love, respect, and gratitude.
I noticed how the jagged edges of colored pencil shavings closely resemble the delicate, fringed petals of a carnation. These vibrant red and pink shavings are perfect for creating a heartfelt card. By layering them, you can recreate the look of lush, ruffled petals.
Whether it’s for Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, or Valentine’s Day, let’s try making a handmade card using colored pencil shavings.
Materials
– Cardstock
– Colored pencils
– Pencil sharpene
– White glue
– Ribbon *Optional
Instructions for making
Step 1. Sharpen the Colored Pencils
Sharpen your colored pencils and collect the shavings. For this project, I sharpened three different colors, including red and pink.
Round the corners of the cardstock. *Optional
Step 2. Glue the Shavings to the Card
Apply white glue and attach the pencil shavings to the card. Layer 3 to 4 small shavings for each flower to create the look of overlapping petals. Arrange the three flowers so they look like a bouquet.
Step 3. Draw the Stems and Leaves
Add the stems and leaves using a green colored pencil.
Step 4. Attach the Ribbon
If you have a ribbon, you can glue a small bow onto the card. Simply attach the bow where the stems meet to finish your card!

母の日のシンボルであるカーネーションには、愛や敬意、そして感謝という想いが込められています。
色鉛筆を削った後に出るギザギザした木片の端くれと、カーネーションの縁の細かな切れ込みがとても似ていて、日頃の感謝を伝えるためのカードにぴったりだと感じました。赤やピンクの美しい削りくずを利用して、幾重にも折り重なったフリルのような花びらを表現しています。
母の日やTeacher Appreciation Week、もしくはバレンタインデーに。色鉛筆の削りくずを利用した手づくりのカードをつくってみましょう。
用意するもの
– カード用紙
– 色鉛筆
– 鉛筆削り
– ボンド
– リボン *オプションです
つくりかた
Step 1. 色鉛筆を削る
色鉛筆を削り、木片を集めます。今回は、赤、ピンクなど３色の色鉛筆を削りました。
カードの角を丸く切り抜きます *オプションです
Step 2. 木片をカードに貼る
木片をホワイトグルーでカードに貼り付けます。花びらを重ねるようなイメージで、小さな木片を３～４枚ほど重ねて花の形をつくりました。３つの花がブーケになるように配置しています。
Step 3. 茎と葉を描く
緑色の色鉛筆で茎と葉を書き足します。
Step 4. リボンをつける
リボンをお持ちなら、小さなボウをカードに貼り付けることもできます。束ねた茎の重なりに、リボンを貼り付ければ完成です。
